BBQ Area

Scott has always wanted a neat barbeque area with lots of storage and work top space. We bought a charcoal kettle bbq a few months ago which we love using as the charcoal gives the food a real bbq taste and as the very first barbie we bought when we moved here over 10 years ago has seen better days we planned to buy a new one so this would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate them both into one space with as much storage as possible.

Our BBQ used to be up where the pool area now is, but obviously had to be moved during our garden renovation. We wanted it to be under cover and sheltered from the winds that tend to howl around the side of our house, we also wanted storage to keep the utensils etc, so Scott built a storage unit to house the BBQ and pizza oven in the same area.

These photos were taken just prior to demolishing to make the pool area.

Scott started by fencing off the part of the garden down the side of the house that is quite unusable as a garden and also the wind howls round that part of the house so it was certainly beneficial to board it off and it also gives us that little bit more privacy from our neighbours back yard. He also made a gate for easy access into that part of the garden as we have some outdoor storage boxes there.

He covered the fence with cement sheeting to prevent the heat from penetrating through to the fence. He then built the 'housing' unit and the cupboard space.

He then tiled the work surface and the area the BBQ would sit and fitted a perspex roof with some off cuts he had lying around, this will help shield from wind and rain whilst cooking.

He made the doors for the cupboards by reusing wood he already had.

He put on some feature tiling to brighten up the area above the BBQ and painted the doors blue.

It is now the perfect place to barbecue, sheltered from the wind and rain with ample storage and counter space and most of it was done by recycling timber, tiles and roofing he already had from other jobs or projects.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...
