When Life Gives You Lemons...28 Great Lemon Tips


1.  For a sore throat, add lemon juice and honey to sage tea and gargle before going to bed

2.  Freeze lemon juice in ice cube trays for later use.

3.  To remove stains from delicate clothing, soak in lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda for 30 minutes before washing.

4.  Add 1/2 lemon to the dishwasher for sparkling, clean-smelling dishes.

5.  Make lemon infused oil. Warm 250 ml olive oil and the rind of 2 lemons. Allow to cool then decant into a stoppered bottle.

6.  Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle the cut side with bicarbonate of soda. Use to scrub surfaces, dishes and stains.


7.  Exfoliate and clean your feet by mixing some lemon pulp and brown sugar and rub. Rinse and moisturise.

8.  Combine lemon juice, vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use as an all purpose cleaner.

9.  Make a facial scrub with sugar and lemon juice.

10.  Add cut lemons and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a vase of flowers to increase their longevity.

11.  Keep ants at bay by pouring some lemon juice around the infested area.

12.  For a clean microwave, heat up a bowl of water and lemon wedges for 30-60 seconds. Those hard to remove stains will now be easily removed, this also neutralises food smells.

13.  Put half a lemon in your fridge to help prevent unpleasant odours.


14.  Clean chrome, brass and copper by mixing lemon juice with soda water, dip a clean cloth into the mixture. Use to wipe down these surfaces, rinse and dry with paper towels to get them looking like new.

15.  Rub half a lemon on sinks and taps to remove limescale buildup. Rinse well.

16.  For whiter laundry, add half a cup of lemon juice to a white wash cycle. Also a teaspoon of lemon juice in the machine during the wash cycle gives your fabric a fresher smell.

17.  To remove any greasiness from utensils, try adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to the dish washing soap.

18.  Clogged drain?, try a mixture of hot lemon juice and soda water to improve drainage by helping unclog the problem.

19.  Keep bin odours at bay by throwing in some lemon peel, this helps to neutralise bad odours from other foodstuff.

20.  Rub half a lemon on a wooden chopping board, leave it overnight, then wash. Lemon juice helps to kill bacteria and neutralises bad odours.

21.  Mix 4 tablespoons of lemon juice with 2 litres of water to get your windows, mirrors and glass surfaces sparkling.

22.  To brighten hair, pour some lemon juice onto your hair and sit in the sun for an hour, this helps brighten the hair by a shade or two. ( Remember to be sun safe whilst doing this, always use sunscreen)

23.  If you are brave and willing to endure the sting for a few seconds, pour a small amount of lemon juice on any small cuts, this helps to stop any bleeding and acts as a disinfectant. Apply lemon juice to insect bites and stings to help alleviate discomfort and itching.

24.  Wash your hands in lemon juice for a great way to get rid of food odours such as onions, garlic and fish.

25.  To aid travel sickness, suck on a slice of lemon to help nausea.

26.  For dandruff relief, mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in 2 cups of water and rinse hair after shampooing.

27.  Blend lemon juice with olive oil for a simple yet healthy salad dressing.

28.  Make refreshing lemonade, Put juice from 3 lemons and some water in a blender and blend. Add sugar to taste. Strain and serve over ice.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons.
