Alpaca Stroll, Bierhope Farm 2018

Cerys is daft on anything Llama and Alpaca so when we found out there was an Alpaca farm near Kelso we jumped at the chance to go for a visit and let the girls walk an alpaca.

We booked the last stroll session of the day and headed off from mum's to Hownan, a small village located in the Scottish Borders not far from Kelso, where the family run Bierhope Farm is nestled into the foothills of the beautiful Cheviot Hills.

We were met by the very friendly Lynne and husband Mark. We were shown to their all boy brood of charming, mischievous and handsome Alpaca's with equally charming names; Tenzing, Graffiti, Yehudi, Monty and Sam. These chaps were their first Alpaca's who joined them in April 2017, they now have 13 Alpaca's including two babies born this year.

Cerys was introduced to her walking pal Graffiti, a very laid back sort of chap, easy to lead, Jodie was introduced to Sam a more funny, mischievous and quirky lad who needed a slightly firmer hand to get him uphill, he preferred to go at his own pace, he was not going to be hurried 😂 which was the absolute perfect match for Jodie. This guy was hilarious and in my opinion, the cutest of the group, (although he did spit at me twice) 😆😆.

It was a beautiful stroll around the farm. Lynne took us a bit further up the stroll path to let us see the stunning Cheviot Hills, they live in such a beautiful peaceful and relaxing place surrounded by amazing countryside views.

After our stroll was finished, the girls got to feed the Alpaca's and Lynne showed Cerys how to hold an Alpaca, she was absolutely hooked and talked constantly after our visit about how much she wanted an Alpaca of her own!!!, which she was promptly told, when you get a place of your own you can have as many animals as you like!!😆

While the girls enjoyed spending extra time with these friendly beauties Lynne offered us a cup of tea and shortbread in the barn where we sat and chatted.

The girls also played with the two dogs, Beau the black lab

and Spike

There are also chickens and pigs.

We didn't leave empty handed, Lynne gave us some freshly laid eggs.

Check out their web page here for further information on the variety of activities they offer, there is something for everyone.

Hickory-Honey Ham...Christmas With The Kranks

I got this Christmas movie cookbook during our 2022 holiday to LA see  here  and I still haven't made anything from it, so for our Christmas in July, I thought I would try the Hickory-Honey ham from the movie Christmas with The Kranks. Scenes from the movie where Nora is running towards the last ham in the store, only to be outsmarted by an elderly lady. I managed to get a couple of reduced shoulder hams from woolies back in May so this gave me an excuse to try a recipe from the book. We also got some Hickory smoking chips for the BBQ. It is a ham that has been smoked over Hickory wood chips for several hours, served with a honey gravy, not out of a tin which it is in the movie. Ingredients 8 cups hickory or other hardwood chips 2 large aluminum foil pans 1 (4kg) fully cooked  bone in ham 1/4 cup salted butter 1 shallot, minced 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp ground ginger 1/...

Corned Beef Stovies

We love stovies, the perfect comfort food for cold evenings and an ideal way to use up leftover meats. I had some corned beef leftover from Scott's sandwiches so that became the base for these stovies. Ingredients 1-2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 kg potatoes (suitable for mashing) 300ml beef stock 1 beef oxo cube 1 tin corned beef Method 1.  Peel and thinly slice potatoes. 2.  Heat oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat until hot. Add onions and fry until golden. 3.  Add sliced potatoes, beef stock and crumbled oxo cube. Stir to combine ingredients well. Cover with lid, turn heat up to medium-high, bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, simmer, stirring every few minutes. Cook for 40-50 minutes or until potato is soft and tender. 4.  Using a potato masher, roughly break the potatoes into smallish pieces. Cut corned beef into small chunks. Add to potatoes, season with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined and corned beef has brea...
