8 Best Foods When You Feel Nauseous

Jodie was recently struck down with nausea and like all parents I like to make sure my kids are still get some nutrition even though they find it hard to eat or drink. Below are a few of my family favourites to help ease nausea and keep hydrated, some of which were used by my gran and mum, (the oldies are always the best), others I picked up along the way, test and trial when my kids were sick. This prompted me to write a blog post on some of my favourites as it is something that you usually just deal with without thinking about but hopefully these tips will come in handy if and when my kids have children of their own.

1.  Ginger- My gran swore by ginger for nausea, she always had ginger biscuits, ginger ale and crystalised ginger although she was very partial to chocolate covered ginger 😜, that was always a gift favourite!. I found it particularly good at easing morning sickness and it was something that could be ingested anytime with no harm to the baby. My kids always nibbled on ginger biscuits or dry crackers when feeling sick. I always have a packet of Blackmores travel calm tablets which I give the kids if they are ill or about to travel on windy roads.

2. Water and clear beverages- Keeping hydrated is a must at anytime but particularly when sick or/and have a fever as vomiting removes fluids from the body so if you are dehydrated this makes you feel worse, drink plenty of water. Getting my kids to drink when they were sick as little ones was always a challenge, I found that icy poles or ice cubes worked well, also sipping on mildly flavoured water, not gulping it down. Another good thing is oral hydration drinks or solutions which can be taken as a drink or frozen as an icy pole, coconut water is also great at hydrating ones body, the key is to keep hydrated as much as possible with whatever suits you.

3.  Dry foods- such as crackers, dry toast, corn flakes (without milk) or pretzels. It is always hard to eat when feeling nauseous but sometimes having something in your stomach helps to soothe and settle your stomach, nibbling on dry, plain foods are always usually easier to handle.

4.  Chilled foods- Especially when you are starting to be able to keep food down. I found that my kids would manage to eat jelly, ice cream, icy poles, watermelon, pineapple, they would help them on the way to getting their appetite back.

5.  Chicken soup and broths- This was another firm favourite of my grans, if she didn't have time or the ingredients to make chicken soup she heated up a tin of chicken soup. I have made chicken soup for my family when they were ill, find the recipe here and here Chicken noodle soup is also very good, either make some with chicken broth and add some dried noodles, simmer until noodles are tender or use packet chicken noodle soup.

6.  Mashed fruit- particularly bananas and apple sauce, they are nutritious and easy to eat, especially for children.

7.  Starchy foods- I particularly enjoy some plain rice, pasta, noodles and potatoes when I have been nauseous, my kids also like plain pasta, noodles and rice when their appetites are just starting to come back.

8.  Herbal teas- These are easier to handle than caffeine loaded teas, try peppermint, chamomile or ginger herbal tea.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...
