Around Here Lately...Kitchen Counter Change

We decided to change the kitchen a bit, well more dining area actually. Instead of a bar table on our island counter top we have opted for a bench built onto the back of the counter, we changed the top as it was only temporary until we decided what we wanted.

The extra storage under the seat makes is so handy for bulkier cooking items.

We decided to paint the face white to match our kitchen units, we are leaving the top as they are to match the counter top and floor.

We moved the unit to where the dining table used to sit.

I forgot to take photos before we moved the table and unit so these were the only ones I could find 😆 (note the Christmas decor on the unit above 🎄)

The unit is full of my food photo props 😜

Now the dining table sits at the bench which gives us plenty of room for the 5 of us to sit at.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious. A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. Rice Krispie Treats for Cake Sculpting

I saw this idea while watching a baking competition series on TV recently, they used it to sculpt and carve larger lightweight novelty modelling decorations for cakes. Ideal when you are making a large novelty sculpture that you don't want to be heavy or weigh the cake down. Such a clever idea and just what I needed to make the main part of Cerys' recent birthday cake. I did some internet searches and found a few recipes, they were all much the same, involving 2 main ingredients...marshmallows and rice krispies. Some also added melted chocolate and butter but I didn't want to involve too much ingredients, this one called for equal amounts of marshmallow and rice krispies and 1 tsp margarine.
