It was a lovely day yesterday and it is coming to the end of the school summer holidays. We decided on a trip to the Salmon Ponds as it is somewhere we have never been to before and the girls were keen to come with us, so that was an extra plus.
The Salmon Ponds, circa 1861, is the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the birthplace of trout in Australia and the origin of
Tasmania's legendary trout fishery.
The Salmon Ponds located in the beautiful Derwent Valley is approximately 45 minutes from Hobart and 10 minutes from New Norfolk.
They have a fascinating museum on Trout Fishing, beautiful historic buildings and a stunning 19th Century English style garden.
Tasmanian angling hall of fame.
Here you find a tribute to the pioneers of trout fishing in Tasmania.
Situated within the cottage built in 1865 for the first superintendent of the Salmon Ponds is the Museum, here you can find out about the changes in trout fishing over the years.
My dad would have spent all day here, he loved anything to do with fishing.
Why not stop by the licensed restaurant and cafe - Pancakes by the Ponds, for a delicious lunch or snack and refreshments.
