Breakfast at The Grounds of Alexandria

During a recent trip to Sydney we decided to visit The Grounds of Alexandria in Alexandria, NSW, for breakfast in The Cafe. This was our first visit and it did not disappoint. We could not believe how busy this place was and we understand why, the food and service is amazing, ok, so we went on a Sunday during their weekend market, so it may not be quite so busy through the week. We joined the queue of hungry diners waiting to be allocated a table, we got a buzzer thing that buzzes when a table is available, so you are free to wander around the grounds and market without fear of losing your space. We enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the market where there were stalls selling fresh produce, fresh cut flowers, clothing, soy candles, fresh ground coffee and much more, delicious aromas were everywhere.

Kevin Bacon, the very large resident pig, looked very comfortable sound asleep in his house.

Our buzzer went and we headed to the cafe where we were shown to our seat, we ordered a cup of tea which came in delightful copper type tea pots.

Everything on the breakfast menu sounded divine, Scott ordered the Chef's brekkie pan which included two free range poached eggs, a massive thick slice of bacon, tomatoes, button mushrooms and chicken chipolatas, drizzled in hollandaise sauce.

I had the brekkie board, which came with two free range poached eggs, chicken sausages, tomatoes, avocado, smoked salmon, marinated feta, asparagus and sourdough bread, the plates were massive, much as it pains me to say, I couldn't finish it all, we didn't need to eat again until tea time.

Before leaving we just had to look around the French-inspired patisserie and bakery, with all the delicious looking sweet and savoury delights, it was hard not to buy something.

It may have been our first time there, but it certainly won't be our last, next
visit to Sydney, The Grounds of Alexandria will be seeing us for lunch.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...
