27th September 2024, Hamish had a vet appointment, I just wanted to get him checked out as he has recently turned 16 years old.
The vet was pretty pleased with how he is going considering his age, she said that not much dogs get to the ripe old age of 16!, she checked him over, she said that his knee cap was completely out of it's socket now and didn't want to play around with it to make him uncomfortable, he also has arthritis, which we knew about and he is on medication for that, she asked if we wanted blood tests done, we said yes.
We waited for the results at the vets as they do it in house, she said that overall he was doing really well, just the obvious ailments for senior dogs, he doesn't have diabetes which was one of her concerns, the thing that got her concerned was one of the indicators was really high, so high the computer couldn't read it, which is something to do with his liver function, he has high ALT and off the scale ALKP, which are his liver levels, which could mean a number of things, such as cancer, but he has certainly got something wrong with his liver, she offered us a scan to find out more, but I don't want to put him through unnecessary stress as there is nothing they could do for him, he got tablets to help neutralise the toxins in his liver which hopefully will make him more comfortable, I also have to try to get a urine sample to see if his urine is concentrated, and this might help narrow down what is wrong with him, but she did say that he didn't know anything about it, which is good, the signs we have to watch out for is vomiting, no interest in food and jaundice, and when that time comes, she said that he will have lost interest in life and that's what we have to look out for, she told us that he could still have a good few months left so take him home and love on him as much as possible, make him comfortable and give him all the palliative care for the time he has left.
He is still a happy wee thing, always wagging his tail, so far he is oblivious and just gets on with life.
