Free Damaged Cactus

Saturday 23rd October 2021, we went to a plant sale, the same person that I bought some of my other cacti from last year, she came over to speak to us and pointed out that she had a couple of damaged pieces of cacti that she was giving away free as she couldn't be bothered or had the time to see if she could salvage them, well I wasn't about to turn down a freebie!!

For free I was willing to take a chance on them, what did I have to loose. One came with the roots intact but damage and some rot to the actual cactus, it had dried out and calloused over a bit so she said to plant that one directly into cactus soil.

The other was a piece of cactus that had damage down one side.

She told us to cut the damaged piece off and leave it to dry out for at least 2 months, then place it on top of the soil and let it fend for itself, hopefully it will survive.

I was going to throw the damaged piece away but thought I would keep it to see how it goes.

I placed it on a tray in the plastic greenhouse (we bought another one from bunnings)

Update 👇 12th December 2021 we noticed a new bud emerging on the larger piece.

Once we saw a bud growing we decided to place it on top of cactus soil, the piece that we cut off wasn't salvageable so we threw it out.

15th December 2021, we noticed another bud emerging.

23rd December 2021, Cerys noticed another bud growing.

15th January 2022, the buds are growing well, it has also started to grow roots..

And I noticed another bud emerging.

Fingers crossed they will survive and produce babies 🙏

I planted the one with the roots on 25th October 2021, hopefully it will take.

UPDATE 👇

27th November 2021, we were moving the cactus out into the sun when I noticed that it has started growing new buds, 3 of them so far, I am super delighted that it has started growing again as I was sure it was well and truly unsavable!!.

I will post more updates as it grows.

3rd December 2021, they are starting to really sprout.

And we also noticed that there are another two new buds

We now have five new buds 😁

12th December 2021, we have 5 more new buds growing, making a total so far of 10.

15th January 2022, the buds are getting really big now.

Cerys noticed another tiny bud growing 16th January 2022.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...

I didn't bother weighing and measuring the ingredients, just go with how much you plan to make, it's that simple. All you need are a few items, if you don't have any of these to hand you can always improvise, instead of the candy eyes use white and milk chocolate, pretzels can be used for the legs as well as the antlers.
