Seating Area Remodel....Part One

Our seating area was starting to look untidy. For some reason, the wooden sleepers that surround the seating had warped making it look uneven and messy, the cushions on the couch had lost their colour making them a horrible shade of green instead of the original colour of grey. After much deliberation as to what to do to tidy it up ( I spent time looking up ideas online) we decided on a concrete bench made with blocks, rendered and painted white for easy keeping, it will also gives us more space.

We decided to revamp the whole area as it has always been bitsy, not an even flow, it doesn't help that our back garden was on a slope to start with, hence the reason for the stepped decking.

We had already planned to replace the deck as it was old, weak and splitting and in some places getting to the point of quite dangerous.

We had to put temporary patches on the broken pieces of deck.

7th August 2021 Scott drew a rough sketch of what we are intending to do.

He then started to remove the old decking boards, but needless to say, the rain came on again!!.

Below are some before photo's I took that morning, as you can see it is a really untidy space that we want to make neat and tidy and somewhere that we enjoy sitting out in.

The plan is to hopefully get this area flowing nicely, making it look like one complete area instead of having various parts and dimensions to it.

The seat cushions were originally grey but for some reason the dye came out of them when it rained, leaving them a horrible green colour!

In between showers, he continued to dismantle the deck and wooden sleepers.

He marked out the area that was to be cut away for the seating.

We continued again on the Sunday, it was a lovely, dry day for a change!

Hamish wondering how he will get across without getting his feet dirty 🐶

When we moved the seat, would you believe that the rose that had been growing there previously but we had cut down and put weed killer on it had grown underneath the seat!!

Balancing precariously whilst hanging out the washing! 😵😂

I did it though!! 💃💃

Saturday 14th August Scott started on the wall for the seating area.

Track where the concrete will go to support the blocks.

Sunday morning he managed to get some blocks laid before the heavens opened, it chucked it down with rain for the rest of the day and night.

Unfortunately, it washed the newly laid mortar out of the joints, so they will have to be redone.

Work commenced again on the weekend of 21st August 2021, we carried the blocks up from the front.

The centre of the blocks were filled in with concrete to give them extra strength.

We had to carry the blocks and bucket loads of FCR and sand from the front, up the side and into the back garden.

We are removing the path to make steps instead.

And that's the work completed for another week.

Friday 27th August, Scott got more blocks that we carried up the back.

Saturday 28th August, another layer of blocks went up.

And more sand was carried up in buckets from the front.

We filled in the holes in the blocks with cement to give it extra strength.

And that is another Saturday wrapped up. Part two coming soon!.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...
