Leaving Scotland...10 Year Anniversary

It is hard to believe we left Scotland for a new life 10 years ago.
24th September was our last day in Kelso, 25th our last day in Scotland.
We had spent the previous few days including Jodie's 10th birthday packing all our belongings into the removal container ready to be shipped to Australia, leaving the house in Kelso, not to arrive at our house in Tassie until 4th December 2008.

Celebrating Jodie's 10th birthday at gran and granda's as the removal men were in our house and everything was packed.

The weeks prior to us leaving we visited family to say our goodbyes before leaving Scotland and everything we knew, the life we had grown up with to embark on a new different kind of life, one that was alien to all of us, we had never set foot in Australia before emigrating there so you can imagine how scary and daunting it was, from now on it would be just our little family of 5 against the world as we had no family or friends in Australia.

Bye Auntie Mary.

Eating breakfast at grandma and granda's in Aberdeen.

 Bye Walter and Olive.

On the evening of 14th September, mum and dad put on a BBQ for a last get together with the neighbours.

Jodie's last day ever at Broomlands Primary School.
Granda walking her to school for the last time.

Our cases packed with all we had to live with for the next 10 weeks.

Coming out of the front door for the last time.

Darren's friends came round to wish him luck.

Saying goodbye to gran and granda.

Leaving Kelso, we stayed overnight in a hotel in Edinburgh before our flight next day.

On our way to Edinburgh airport.

Finding ways to pass the 5 1/2 hour wait at Heathrow airport.

Before embarking on our new life in Australia we were invited to stay with Caroline in Kuala Lumpur for 3 weeks where unbeknown to the kids, grandma and granda were also going to be there for 2 weeks, they decided to surprise them and spend some quality time with us before we moved.

On the plane bound for KL.

Arriving in KL.

Surprised to see grandma and granda there.

Playing with Bazie and Chili.

Caroline's house.

Endless fun in the pool.

While we were there, Scott and I got the chance to spend a couple of days by ourselves in Langkawi.

Before we knew it, it was time to say our goodbye's again.

We still had 1 week left of sightseeing in Kuala Lupur before our final journey to Australia.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...

Reindeer Mini Chocolate Rolls

How cute are these guys!!, super easy to make and perfect for kiddies Christmas parties. I didn't bother weighing and measuring the ingredients, just go with how much you plan to make, it's that simple. All you need are a few items, if you don't have any of these to hand you can always improvise, instead of the candy eyes use white and milk chocolate, pretzels can be used for the legs as well as the antlers. Ingredients mini chocolate rolls white melting chocolate red and brown mini M & M's icing eyes milk chocolate melts pretzels chocolate matchsticks Method 1.  Melt some white chocolate melts according to packet directions. Allow to cool a little. Dip one end of the chocolate rolls into the melted white chocolate place dipped end up on a lined baking tray, put a mini M & M onto the nose part of the dipped end, add the eyes and using writing icing, draw a mouth. Allow to set. 2.  When set, melt some mi...
