Resurfacing And Updating Our Backyard

Our backyard has been in serious need of a resurfacing revamp for a while now, the decking, which is now over 13 years old was looking tired and dated, some of the the deck boards had split and broken and it was getting quite dangerous, only a matter of time before someone's foot went clean through!

Before

I had seen an advert on TV about DIY pebble resurfacer but it was expensive so we planned to replace most of the old decking with new.

Then 24th July 2020 we happened upon the very pebble resurfacer that was advertised on TV on clearance at Bunnings, reduced from a whopping $49 a tub to a fabulous $5 a tub, well that was it, we bought 46 tubs so we would have enough to resurface the whole of the decking and seating area, and better still, Scott got it for $4.75 a tub with his power pass card...win win!!, $218 to resurface the entire area, how cool is that!

Of course, we had to move everything to the other side of the garden before we could start.

Over the weekend of the 19th September 2020, Scott lined the area with cement sheet to make it even and of course to close off the deck boards so the area could be resurfaced with the pebble mix.

He started to resurface the area with the pebble mix on 20th September 2020 but it started raining and of course halted the setting of the mix so we decided to leave it until it was better weather as it needs to have a few days of dry weather and temps above 15 degrees, so we decided that it was best to leave it for now and then we just got waylaid with other projects, but we did level off the bit under the window.

We also filled in the 'step down' bit under the windows to level it off with the rest of the grassed area giving it a more even look.

Work resumed on the weekend of 20th March 2021.

Unfortunately it was extremely difficult and time consuming to work with, the advert made it look so easy!! (maybe the reason it was reduced so much!)

Needless to say, the weather turned against us again, it rained for a few days after the weekend and soaked everything so we couldn't get back to it this weekend (27th March 2021) as it needs to be completely dry for it to stick.

As we were having quite a few problems with the pebble mix we decided to go down another route and use proper pebbles, we will use the pebble mix on another part of the garden so they won't go to waste, it just wasn't turning out how we envisaged. See post here and here

Hickory-Honey Ham...Christmas With The Kranks

I got this Christmas movie cookbook during our 2022 holiday to LA see  here  and I still haven't made anything from it, so for our Christmas in July, I thought I would try the Hickory-Honey ham from the movie Christmas with The Kranks. Scenes from the movie where Nora is running towards the last ham in the store, only to be outsmarted by an elderly lady. I managed to get a couple of reduced shoulder hams from woolies back in May so this gave me an excuse to try a recipe from the book. We also got some Hickory smoking chips for the BBQ. It is a ham that has been smoked over Hickory wood chips for several hours, served with a honey gravy, not out of a tin which it is in the movie. Ingredients 8 cups hickory or other hardwood chips 2 large aluminum foil pans 1 (4kg) fully cooked  bone in ham 1/4 cup salted butter 1 shallot, minced 1/3 cup honey 1/4 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp ground ginger 1/...

Corned Beef Stovies

We love stovies, the perfect comfort food for cold evenings and an ideal way to use up leftover meats. I had some corned beef leftover from Scott's sandwiches so that became the base for these stovies. Ingredients 1-2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 kg potatoes (suitable for mashing) 300ml beef stock 1 beef oxo cube 1 tin corned beef Method 1.  Peel and thinly slice potatoes. 2.  Heat oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat until hot. Add onions and fry until golden. 3.  Add sliced potatoes, beef stock and crumbled oxo cube. Stir to combine ingredients well. Cover with lid, turn heat up to medium-high, bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, simmer, stirring every few minutes. Cook for 40-50 minutes or until potato is soft and tender. 4.  Using a potato masher, roughly break the potatoes into smallish pieces. Cut corned beef into small chunks. Add to potatoes, season with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined and corned beef has brea...
