17 On The 17Th

 What is?, I hear you ask!


Our 17th anniversary living in Tasmania, Australia. 17 years ago on the 17th October 2008, we first set foot on Australian soil, having never even been here for a holiday!, nope, we went into this move basically blind, I mean, we did do some research into moving to Australia, weighing up the pros and cons of where to set up roots, finally settling on Tasmania. I had just turned 40, Scott 41, Darren 17, Jodie 10 and Cerys a tiny little 4 year old, now they are all grown adults, with Cerys turning 21 in July this year.



We didn't do anything to celebrate, we were all in different places, Darren spent the day in Disneyland, Tokyo, Jodie was out for tea with Porsha and Cerys was at Blake's, so it was only Scott and I, oh and Hamish of course, whom, I might add, turned 17 in September.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. Rice Krispie Treats for Cake Sculpting

I saw this idea while watching a baking competition series on TV recently, they used it to sculpt and carve larger lightweight novelty modelling decorations for cakes. Ideal when you are making a large novelty sculpture that you don't want to be heavy or weigh the cake down. Such a clever idea and just what I needed to make the main part of Cerys' recent birthday cake. I did some internet searches and found a few recipes, they were all much the same, involving 2 main ingredients...marshmallows and rice krispies. Some also added melted chocolate and butter but I didn't want to involve too much ingredients, this one called for equal amounts of marshmallow and rice krispies and 1 tsp margarine.
