Kitchen Island With Seating

I needed more storage space in the kitchen so we decided to build a large kitchen island with bar stool seating. I wanted a better use of the space as well as being more practical, it's quite tight on countertop space when there are a few of us doing things in the kitchen.

This is the kitchen before, we are going to store the table and use it for Christmas, but we will get rid of the chairs as they are quite bulky.

The bench was also used as storage as well as seating.

We added the bench back in 2018 so we have had it for a while now, see post here

15th August 2025, Scott started taking the existing unit and the storage bench apart, it is at an angle and we wanted to straighten it up.

Upon taking the unit apart, we came across this writing, I'm not sure of the date I wrote it, but it was when we were remodelling the kitchen years ago, long before I started the blog.

16th August, he went to buy some supplies and start making up the carcass of the extended unit.

He had to repatch the flooring as we are not getting new flooring at the moment.

We dismantled our kitchen table for storage.

He joined three new countertops together to give us one large island.

He removed this old countertop as it was at an angle and we needed a straight line to join the new countertop that he made.

( Excuse the rugs scattered all over the floor, our almost 17 year old dog needs them to navigate across the flooring.)

I am going to have fun decorating this large area for the various holidays, Halloween will be the first one.

I have been on the look out for one of these gurgling fish jugs for some time now, I wanted a pink one, but they are so expensive.

So when I spotted one in The Reject Shop for $16, I just had to get it.

Needless to say, I got Scott to paint it pink for me! 😁

It has given me so much more storage space.

Darren had to make his coffee in the living room 😜

We couldn't use the countertop until it had dried, so I had to do everything on a camping table in the middle of the kitchen.

We also changed the light fitting.

We bought the bar stools from Kmart.

I love how everything seamlessly flows now, all the countertops match instead of the mismatched ones we had before.

It looks so good when you see it beside the before photo (above).

It has made a huge difference and given me a lot more storage and counter top space.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...

Rice Krispie Treats for Cake Sculpting

I saw this idea while watching a baking competition series on TV recently, they used it to sculpt and carve larger lightweight novelty modelling decorations for cakes. Ideal when you are making a large novelty sculpture that you don't want to be heavy or weigh the cake down. Such a clever idea and just what I needed to make the main part of Cerys' recent birthday cake. I did some internet searches and found a few recipes, they were all much the same, involving 2 main ingredients...marshmallows and rice krispies. Some also added melted chocolate and butter but I didn't want to involve too much ingredients, this one called for equal amounts of marshmallow and rice krispies and 1 tsp margarine. Ingredients 200 g marshmallows 200 g rice krispies 1 tsp margarine Method 1.  Put marshmallows on the bottom of a large microwavable bowl, add rice krispies and margarine on top. Place in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, it is important to watch it a...
