California Day 8 - Route 66 to Barstow

On the 27th of October 2022 we packed up and left our accommodation in LA, and began the drive up to Barstow.

Our first stop was the Cucamonga Service Station; a historic gas and automobile station located in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Built in 1915, it is the only surviving gas station of its design along Route 66. After its closure in 1971, it was eventually restored and re-opened as a Route 66 Museum in 2015.

We then headed to San Bernardino, where we visited the Wigwam Motel for some photos.

Next on our list was the First Original McDonald's Museum, also located in San Bernardino. As the name implies, this was the site of the original McDonald's fast-food restaurant, which was opened in 1948 by Dick and Mac McDonald.

Our next stop was the California Route 66 Museum, located in Victorville, California. Opened in 1995, this museum contains exhibits which detail the development of the Historic Route 66. Unfortunately, we went on the day the museum was closed, so we couldn't get to see inside, we did however take photos of the outside.

As lunchtime approached we decided to make a stop at Roy's Motel and Café in Barstow.

Both Scott and I had the Chili.

Jodie had a bowl of chips, which she couldn't finish as she had also ordered a dessert, typical Jodie!. (Wait until you see the size of the dessert).

Cerys had the veggie burger and a bowl of fruit.

Jodie also managed to scoff down an absolutely MASSIVE Marilyn Monroe Shake, topped with a slice of red velvet cake, seriously, I don't know here she puts it?, she must have hollow legs! 😂

I mean, just look at the size of that, its bigger than her head!

But, was there any doubts she could finish it?, nope, non at all! 😲🙈

Time to hit the road again.

We finished off our day at Calico Ghost Tours in Yermo, where we wandered along the historical mining town, decked out for Halloween. We spent time taking in the desert scenery, and looking through the small shops that lined the street. There was an old schoolhouse at the end of the street, as well as an old mine.

Finally, we settled down in our accommodation in Barstow, preparing for another day of road tripping ahead!

We stayed the night in the California Inn, which had an absolutely massive cactus in the gardens.

Our room had a stunning view of the pool area.

After taking a few photos, we settled down to watch TV.

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...
