Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 and was abandoned in the mid-1890's after silver lost its value. The town that once gave miners a good living lost its hustle and became a "ghost town."
We visited the ghost town during our road trip to Barstow on 27th October 2022. It was absolutely fascinating, we wandered up and down the "main street", browsing in the gift shops that lined both sides.
As it was close to Halloween, the town was decked out with lots of scary props and decorations adding to the spookiness of the deserted town.
The Calico Odessa Railroad was installed in 1958.
Calico's original school house was built in 1885 at this same location above the town. This replica was built in the early 1950's. The replica is about 1/3 less in size than the original school house.
Yep, the girls found a cat to pet.
It was a really interesting place to see, I would definitely love to go there again.
