New Cacti Beds

I noticed that the cacti that was planted in with the succulents weren't growing as well as the ones that are planted in pots on their own so I wanted to replant them separately in the hope that they flourish like the others.

Would you believe the cactus on the left was larger than the one on the right when we got them both at the same time!

We were trying to work out where we could put them and decided at the edge of the pool decking against the back wall.

Where we planned to put them.

We didn't want huge plant pots that would encroach on the deck space so we went in to Bunnings to see what they had, nothing caught my eye until I saw these vertical paver stones which I thought would make perfect planter boxes for the cacti.

They are $49 for a pack of 6 but we noticed some broken ones that had been placed on a shelf above the boxes, a member of staff happened to be passing so we asked him what they would be doing with the broken ones, he said that they would be marked down and that he could do it now for us if we wanted them, I knew Scott would managed to salvage them and turn them into what I had envisaged so we said yes, well, we got a bargain, he marked the whole lot down to $20!, ok, we would have some wastage with having to cut them but not much.

Scott started working on them in between showers of rain on the weekend of 27th March 2021.

The unbroken ones have a straight cut at each end but Scott cut them so they would interlock making them look more natural looking and neater.

He used cement sheet fixed to the deck by wood to make the actual bed giving it more strength.

He then stuck the wall pavers to the cement sheet using landscape adhesive.

First one finished.

Second one.

We still have a good bit left for other projects and there wasn't much wastage.

I took these measurements of the cacti on 28th March 2021 before we replanted them to see how much they grow in their new home.

I replanted them in their new beds on 31st March 2021, let's see how they grow!

8th April 2021, I decided to move a few cacti around again (hopefully it won't do them any harm). I took a couple of the ones I had planted in the new cacti bed to pots on their own as I was worried that the beds weren't going to be deep enough for the larger ones.

I also moved a couple from the ornamental garden and put one in a pot and the other in the new bed.

These are the 2 that I moved from the ornamental garden.

I also took new measurements.

This pretty little one's first flower popped out to show it's glory on 9th April 2021, and isn't she a beauty 💕 🌸

And it has more babies

First flower 9th April 2021

I still have to add white decorative stones on top of the soil but will update with more photos.

Once the white stones are added it will help to bring out the cacti as they are a bit lost in the brown soil.

I knew this guy had grown but didn't realise it had grown so much!!. We took another measurement on 7th May 2021 and it has grown above the ruler now...it measured 27cm on 8th April 2021.

So I had to use a tape measure this time.....

...now it measures 35cm!!!!

WHAT!!!! it has grown a whopping 8cm in one month!

Measured again 2nd June 2021 and he has grown some more, up to 38cm now!!

Measured again 16th June 2021 and it has grown some more!!

New measurement, 2nd November 2021 and it has got lots of "arms" growing.

I can't believe I didn't take measurements of this guy, this was taken 16th June 2021 and look below at the babies growing.

New measurement taken 21st July 2021.

And here it is on 9th November 2021, sprouted eight stunning flowers at once, would have been ten but the first two came out earlier and have now died away.

This was the first two on 2nd November 2021.

Isn't it absolutely stunning !!

Aussie Pie Floater

With Australia day fast approaching, I had to share this Aussie icon. The pie floater is a meat pie submerged in thick pea soup, the pies are traditionally turned upside down sitting or sometimes submerged in the pea soup. The first time I had ever heard of this was while watching an episode of Billy Connolly's Australian tour. He was doing a show in Adelaide and indulged in one of these south Aussie icons. We tried a similar thing called a tiger pie from Harry's Cafe de Wheels on the Sydney harbour, the Tiger is a meat pie served with scoop of mash a scoop of mushy peas and a scoop of gravy, it was really delicious.  A pie floater put simply is a meat pie on top of or covered in green pea soup with a choice of sauce squirted on top, the usual being ketchup, brown sauce, mint sauce, gravy or bbq sauce, some people also enjoy vinegar over their floater, I suppose the options can be endless, whatever 'floats' your pie!!. I searched a few variou...

Reindeer Mini Chocolate Rolls

How cute are these guys!!, super easy to make and perfect for kiddies Christmas parties. I didn't bother weighing and measuring the ingredients, just go with how much you plan to make, it's that simple. All you need are a few items, if you don't have any of these to hand you can always improvise, instead of the candy eyes use white and milk chocolate, pretzels can be used for the legs as well as the antlers. Ingredients mini chocolate rolls white melting chocolate red and brown mini M & M's icing eyes milk chocolate melts pretzels chocolate matchsticks Method 1.  Melt some white chocolate melts according to packet directions.
